STURGIS - August R. "Budd" Horvath, 89, formerly of South Bend, passed away at 6:30 p.m. on Monday of natural causes. Budd was born on Nov. 21, 1918, in South Bend to August R. and Mary (Guzowski) Horvath. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Virginia Dalke; and by a son, Kenneth Horvath. On June 6, 1929, he married Alice Przybysz, who also preceded him in death on August 10, 1991, after 52 years of marriage. He is survived by a daughter, Christine (Richard) Watkins of Edwardsburg, MI; a son, Richard (Connie) Horvath of Dallas, TX, and by his loving companion and dear friend of 16 years, Geraldine Summey of Sturgis, MI. He also is survived by five grandchildren, Tammy Stow, Tracy Horvath, Tara (David) Jones, Michael (Madeline) Watkins and Jennifer Horvath; seven great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter. On December 12, 1941, Budd enlisted in the United States Army Air Force and was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained while serving in the Pacific during World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1943, as a sergeant. He worked for more than 20 years at the Studebaker Corporation and retired from the South Bend Community School Corporation as an engineer after 22 years. Budd was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church in Sturgis, American Legion Post 215, 13th Air Force Veterans Association and the Kaneohe Klippers. Family and friends may gather to remember Budd's life from 2 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 11, in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Road, South Bend, where a rosary will be prayed at 6 p.m.. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, Jan. 12 at 11 a.m. in Holy Cross Catholic Church on Wilbur St., South Bend. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.
