SOUTH BEND, IN - Alvina Rose Helak, 88, passed away on Monday, July 30, 2018 in the Waterford Assisting Living Center. Alvina was born June 5, 1930 in South Bend, to the late Leo and Felice (Stefanski) Winkel. She was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Ann Winkel and brothers, Donald & Richard Winkel. On September 30, 1950 Alvina married Donald Helak; he survives along with their children, Ann (Kelly) Newland, Susan (John) Hirschler, Paul (Kay) Helak, and Daniel (Kim) Helak; grandchildren, Riley Helak, Melissa (Paul) Miceli, & Ryan (Monica) Newland and; a great-granddaughter, Alexa Miceli. Alvina was a parishioner of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. She enjoyed traveling and watching all her grandchildren's sporting events. Alvina was a homemaker, and a very dependable active mother. She was a member of the PTA, room mother, or whatever the schools needed a parental volunteer for. Alvina was also a loving, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Visitation for Alvina will take place 12:30pm to 1:30pm Thursday, August 2, 2018 in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Rd. with a Funeral Service to begin at 1:30pm in the funeral home chapel. Entombment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.
