Arthur Dean Bennett, 50, 67578 Lake Trail, Lakeville, was killed about 1:30 p.m. Monday when a tire blew up as he was welding the rim at Hass Concrete Products Co., 24423 State Road 23. Coroner Dr. Louis Grwinski said Bennett died as a result of severe head injuries. An autopsy was conducted Monday afternoon at Memorial Hospital. Grwinski pronounced Bennett dead about 2:15 p.m. at the scene. His body was removed to the hospital by Life Ambulance. County police Detective Kevin Whippo said Bennett was working with a large, mounted truck tire in the company's maintenance garage. The tire exploded as he was welding the rim. Whippo said the force of the explosion knocked out 11 windows and damaged some lighting fixtures, bulbs, and ceiling panels.
Gwrinski said the inflated tire had 120 lbs of pressure. "Bennett was welding the rim and put a hole in the tire. There was no inner tube in the tire. When the tire exploded the force of the air pressure threw Bennett into the front bumper of a pickup truck, that was adjacent to the tire. Bennett was born on Nov. 10, 1932, in Culver and had lived in Lakeville most of his life. On April 18, 1953, in Lakeville, he married Betty Lou Wozny. She survives with a daughter, Jennifer Joan Olsen of Lakeville; a son, Jeffery Dean Bennett of Lakeville; four grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Judy Rouch of Milwaukee, Wis.; four brothers, Derl Bennett of Lakeville, Colonel Bennett of North Liberty, Charles Dennis Bennett of South Bend and DeWayne Bennett of Elkhart; and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charley Bennett of Lakeville. Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in the Lakeville Christian Church, with Rev. Roy Herbster, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Southlawn Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the Palmer Memorial Chapel, Lakeville.
