SOUTH BEND - Donald W. "Pap" Winkel, 69, of York Pa., formerly of South Bend, died Jan. 20 in his home of natural causes. Survivors include four daughters, Vicki Stevens of Lexington, Ky., Debbie Allen of Fountain Hills, Ariz., Bonnie Sowers of Boiling Srpings, Pa., and Diane Winkel of York; a sister, Alvina Halek of South Bend; and a brother, Richard of South Bend. Services were at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Joseph Catholic Church, York.

Donald W. "Pap" Winkel, 69, of York, Pa., died of natural causes at 6:06 p.m. Sunday, Jan 20, in his residence. He was born April 1, 1932, in South Bend, Ind., to Felice M. and Leo Joseph Winkel, who preceded him in death. He had retired as a sergeant with the Springettsbury Township (Pa.) Police Department after 25 years of distinguished service. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, NRA, and was a Eucharistic minister at St. Joseph Church. He had been a sergeant with the U.S. Marines in the Korean War. He was a marksman in the U.S. Marines, and shot competitively in the NRA and Marines. He was also a graduate of the State Police Academy in Harrisbuirg, Pa. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Emma E. (Henry); four daughters, Vicki Stephens of Lexington, Ky., Debbie Allen of Fountain Hills, Ariz., Bonnie Sowers of Boiling Springs, Pa., and Diane Winkel of York, Pa.; a sister, Alvina Helak of South Bend; and a brother, Richard Winkel of South Bend; eight grandchildren; nieces and nephews; four step-grandchildren; and by one step-great-granddaughter.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, 2935 Kingston Road, York, Pa. Rev. Louis Petruha, O.F.M. Cap, officiated, and burial was at Holy Saviour Cemetery, York. Military honors by the York County Veterans Honor Gurad.
Friends called from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, in the John W. Keffer Funeral Home Inc., 902 Mt. Rose Avenue, York, and also called from one hour before services last Thursday in the church. Contributions in memory of Donald may be made to VNA Hospice, 28 E. Market Street, York, PA 17403; or to St. Joseph Catholic Church, 2935 Kingston Road, York, PA 17402
