SOUTH BEND - Herman A. Hoffmann, 85, of South Bend, IN, died at 2:10 AM Monday, March 4, 2013, at Milton Home, South Bend, IN. He was born on August 22, 1927, in South Bend, IN, to the late Karl Herman and Anna (Borostowski) Hoffmann. On December 19, 1949, in Valparaiso, IN, he married Eveline Veronica (Kendall) Hoffmann, who preceded him in death on November 27, 1984. Herman was a revered architect and engineer who worked in the South Bend area, most recently for the South Bend Community School Corporation (SBCSC), overseeing renovations and buildings from 1973 until 1993. After retiring he continued working for the SBCSC as a consultant, and in his service he transcribed the school system's architectural building demographics to a computer database. Before his tenure at the SBCSC, he worked for Roy Worden and Associates and Wheelabrator Corp. Herman is survived by his daughter, Kim Hoffmann of South Bend; two sons, John P. Hoffmann of South Bend and Karl H. (Jan) Hoffmann of Aurora, IL; three grandchildren, Stacey (Tony) Slack, Karl Kenneth (Amy) Hoffmann and Kevin (Allison) Hoffmann; five great-grandchildren, Brenden, Savannah, Patrick, Alison and Andrew; and one sister, Eleanor Lybarger of South Bend. Five sisters, Hilda Weaver, Mildred Fitterling, Irma Sayer, Rose Hoffmann and Dorothea Hoffmann, and his twin brother, Karl Fritz Hoffmann, all preceded him in death. Herman was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, South Bend, where he served as Deacon, Choir Member and instrumentalist for services. He was closely involved with the local theatre/music venues, first with the Hoffmann Family and later as a member of the South Bend Symphonic Choir and the Presbyterian Players under many directors, including Rocco Germano, James Casaday and Robert Demaree. He played a vital role in concerts, plays and operas, including Guys and Dolls, Dido and Aeneas, Lucia di Lammermoor, Brigadoon, Man of La Mancha, and many others. He was an accomplished singer and musician, and loved Simon and Garfunkel, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, as much as Mozart, Beethoven and Brahms. During World War II, Herman served in the United States Navy along with his twin brother, Karl, in the Philippines at the end of the war. He enjoyed competitive golfing at Erskine and bowling on Chippewa Bowling Leagues. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Wednesday, March 6, 2013, at Palmer Funeral Home-River Park Chapel, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend. Rev. Gregory Fiechtner, pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran, will officiate. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery, South Bend.
