"A." on the gravestone stands for "Anthony" (Cemetery Interment records)
On Oct. 29, 1889, Rev. Val Czyzewski, C. S. C., Rector of St. Hedwig Catholic Church in South Bend, Indiana, married Anthony Ruszkowski and Mary Anna Grzezinski. According to the 1900 census of South Bend, Indiana, Anton Ruszkowski, a woodworker, and his wife, Marcyanna, were both born in German Poland. They had immigrated in the early 1880s, had been married 11 years, and she had had five children of whom four were living (in birth order): Frank, Antonina, Czeslaus (aka Chester), and Helena Ruszkowski. Circa 1901, Marcyanna had another son, Stephen. (1910 census) Marcyanna died in 1902. On Feb. 23, 1903, Rev. Val Czyzewski, C. S. C., Rector of St. Hedwig Catholic Church in South Bend, Indiana, married Anthony Ruszkowski and Catherine Otolski. The 1910 census household of Anthony and Catherine Ruszkowski included Catherine's son, Joseph Otolski, and four of Anthony's children: Frank, Tony (aka Antonina), Chester, and Stephen Ruszkowski. By the time of the 1930 census, Stephen Ruszkowski had married, and he and his wife Clementine shared the Ruszkowski family home at 458 S. Walnut Street with his father and step-mother, and continued to do so. Anthony died in 1952. His date and place of death are given in his Indiana death certificate for which the informant was Stephen Ruszkowski, known from other records to be his son. Stephen reported that his father was retired and a widower. It was his understanding that his father had been born June 11, 1864 in Poland.
