Wilhelm Winkel was born 25 Sept 1851 in Germany. Records indicate both Schlagenthin, Prussia (an Estate in the old Province of Brandenburg, Prussia ) 8 Km north from the town Arnswalde now Choszczno, Poland. The estate of Schlagenthin is near what is now Duza Cerkwica, Sępólno County, Poland, and this is listed as his city of birth on the ship manifest when he came to America. Damerka -Damerkau (near Lusino,PL) is listed as his city of birth on his first Declaration of Intention. Both of these list year of birth of 1852. (Baltimore, Passenger Lists, 1820-1964). He married Anna Buchholz, who was born 15 June 1851, city of birth listed on records as Schlagenthin, Prussia. Whether or not this is the correct city of birth for either them, it is likely that this was their last city of residence before emigrating. The pair came to the United States on the Bresslan, sailing from Bremen, Germany, and arriving in Baltimore, Maryland in May of 1907 (United States of America Declaration of Intention, No. 8483, Original 383 (25 Jan 1919 & 29 Oct 1908). Their children seem to be nearly all born in Teklanowo, in Sępólno County which is bordered by Chojnice County to the north. Duza Cerkwica, is in what is now part of Sepolno County. The family settled in South Bend, Indiana; Wilhelm died there in 1924, and Anna passed away 25 Dec 1932 of Bronchopneumonia, Arteriosclerosis (U.S., Find A Grave Index, 1600s-Current).
