Claire Marie Schubert, age 87, of South Bend, passed away at 9:10 p.m. Saturday, April 13, 2013 at Healthwin, South Bend. She was born August 31, 1925 in South Bend to the late Andrew and Theresa (Kowalski) Kazmierzak and has lived in this area all of her life. She was a 1943 graduate of South Bend Catholic High School. On January 8, 1949 in South Bend, she married Lawrence James "Jim" Schubert, who preceded her in death on January 15, 2012. Also preceding her in death were Claire's brother, Ray Kazmierzak; son-in-law, Tony Lacopo, in 2010; and sister-in-law, Ida Kazmierzak, in 2012. Surviving are four daughters, Christine (Robert) Berndt of Chapel Hill, NC, Louise (the late Tony) Lacopo of South Bend, Mary (Terry) Foltz of Cassopolis, MI, Rita (David) Kierski of Goldsboro, NC; six sons, Mark P. Schubert of Mishawaka, Leo (Denys) Schubert of Silver Spring, MD, Eric (Carla) Schubert of Elkhart, IN, David L. Schubert of South Bend, Paul (Rita) Schubert of Lombard, IL and Martin (Lynda) Schubert of Carlsbad, CA; 20 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. The grandchildren are Petra Schubert and Patrick Schubert; Maria (Jeremiah) Schroeder, Sarah Schubert, and Andrew Schubert; Jennifer (Charles) Matchett, Rosanne (Steve) Hostetler, Tony (Aleah) Lacopo, and Laura (Eddie) Williams; Alyxandria Schubert, Jaime (Brendan) Leahy, Samantha Schubert, and Ryan Schubert; Margaret (Benjamin) Jacob and Robert Foltz; Thomas Kierski, Matthew Kierski, and Anna Kierski; and Zachary Schubert and Kendall Schubert. Great-grandchildren are Joseph Matchett, Grace Matchett, and Kieran Leahy. Also surviving are two sisters, Gertrude (Robert) Kerger and Marie Kazmierzak, both of South Bend; and two brothers, Benedict (the late Ida) Kazmierzak of Plainfield, IN and Andrew (Wanda) Kazmierzak of South Bend. Claire was a mother and homemaker for her husband and ten children. She loved to cook for her family, and was famous for her pies, pickles, jelly, doughnuts and Christmas cookies. She was a faithful attendee of Sacred Heart Parish, and later St. Anthony's Parish in South Bend. She ministered in both parishes to women in need of transportation and groceries. She enjoyed playing in a monthly bridge club with a close circle of friends, and tending her flower and vegetable gardens. She bowled in a mixed league with her husband, and accompanied him to regional tournaments. She attended Notre Dame football games with her husband for several decades, and liked organizing game-day parties. A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, April 20, 2013 at St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church, 2114 E. Jefferson Blvd., South Bend, IN 46617. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery, South Bend. Friends may visit with the family from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday at the Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend, IN 46635, where the rosary will be recited at 7:00 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to Healthwin, reference Claire M. Schubert, 20531 Darden Road, South Bend, IN 46637, to help beautify the garden area.
