SOUTH BEND - Lawrence James "Jim" Schubert, 88, passed away Sunday morning at 6:30 AM, January 15, 2012, in his home. He was employed by the Verkler Construction Company for over 30 years and worked as an Estimator. Prior to that he worked as a junior architect in the South Bend area and collaborated on several projects. Jim was born on November 20, 1923, in South Bend, IN, to the late Lawrence Phillip and Lillian (Auer) Schubert. On January 8, 1949, in South Bend, IN, he married Claire M. (Kazmierzak) Schubert, who survives. Along with his loving wife of 63 years, Claire, Jim is also survived by his four daughters, Christine (Robert) Berndt of Chapel Hill, NC, Louise Lacopo of South Bend, Mary (Terry) Foltz of Cassopolis and Rita (David) Kierski of Goldsboro, NC; and by his six sons, Mark P. Schubert of South Bend, Paul (Rita) Schubert of Lombard, IL, and Martin (Lynda) Schubert of Carlsbad, CA; 20 grandchildren (Petra, Patrick, Maria, Sarah, Andrew, Jennifer, Tony Jr., Rosanne, Laura, Alyxandria, Jaime, Samantha, Ryan, Robert, Margaret, Thomas, Matthew, Anna, Zachary, and Kendall); and two great-grandsons (Joseph, Kieran). In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his only sibling, Mary Cecilia (Schubert) Hiss. Jim studied architecture at the University of Notre Dame when he was drafted by the Army Air Corps in 1943. He was trained as a C-47 engine mechanic and served three years. After the war he returned to Notre Dame and completed his degree in Architecture in 1948. He married his bride in January 1949 and spent the next 63 years raising a large and wonderful family. He was giving of his time and ushered for many years at Sacred Heart Parish at Notre Dame. He had a passion for coaching Little League baseball and bowling with the Knights of Columbus. He touched the lives of many of his players by being a good sportsman and mentor. He was a leading player on his bowling team and was always in pursuit of the perfect game. He enjoyed the company of friends and family, and he would always host friends at the house after a Notre Dame home football game. His laughter, smile, and engaging sense of humor will be missed by everyone who knew him.
