NEW CARLISLE - Elizabeth A. "Betty" Miller, 77, of New Carlisle, IN, passed away at 12:45 p.m. Sunday, October 30, 2011. She was born on February 21, 1934, in LaPorte, IN, to the late Frank F. and Regina (Wozniak) Modjeska, and was a lifelong area resident. Along with her parents, Elizabeth was also preceded in death by her infant brother, Tommy, and her sister, Frances Modjeska. Elizabeth had been formerly employed at Doc Smith's Grocery in Mill Creek for several years. On November 20, 1954, as Elizabeth A. Modjeska, she married John A. Miller in New Carlisle, IN. Elizabeth is survived by her loving husband, John A. Miller of New Carlisle, IN; her children, Jackie (Gary Wordinger) Holler of New Carlisle, IN, and John C. Miller of South Bend, IN; three grandchildren, Michelle (Christopher) Sanders, Kathy (Tony Varda) Holler and Amy (Dwan) Bradshaw; three great-grandchildren, Alexander, Dwan II and Andrew; four sisters, Dorothy Loree of New Carlisle, IN, Mary Andrews of Chicago, IL, Carol Weber of Jackson, MI, and Josephine Carroll of New Carlisle, IN; two brothers, Frank J. (Lynn) Modjeska of New Carlisle, IN, and Ed (Lola) Modjeska of LaPorte, IN; and several nieces and nephews. Elizabeth was a member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish and the American Legion Post #297 Women's Auxiliary. She always loved gardening and enjoyed giving away most of her crops to family and friends for their enjoyment. She loved and enjoyed her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and always had a good word for everyone. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 5, 2011, at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in New Carlisle, IN, with Rev. Paul McCarthy officiating. Burial will follow at Sauktown Cemetery in LaPorte County, IN. Memorial contributions may be made to the Center for Hospice Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637; or to Pet Refuge, 2300 West 6th Street, Mishawaka, IN 46544. Kaniewski Funeral Home, New Carlisle, IN, is in charge of arrangements.
