SOUTH BEND - Chester E. Leda, 87, of South Bend, Indiana passed away at 12:48 a.m., Sunday, November 29, 2015, in the Sanctuary at Holy Cross. Chester was born on October 12, 1928 in South Bend to John and Mary (Makowski) Leda, and was a lifelong resident. He had been employed with Uniroyal-Ballband from 1945-1990. He had also worked at Martin's Supermarket for 10 years, and was an Usher at Gate 6 for the University of Notre Dame Men's and Women's basketball games. On May 28, 1977 in South Bend, he married Patricia Turrell, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Shelia Morehouse and Lisa Reynolds both of Florida; one step-daughter, Debra (Donald) Frye of Niles, Michigan; one son, Roy C. (Linda) Leda of Clearwater, Florida; one stepson, Keith (Cheryl) Turrell of Niles, Michigan; many grandchildren and great-granchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Nancy Kmiecik of San Diego, California and Lucy (Ray) Lemieux of Lake Havasu City, Arizona. Chester was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Pete Morehouse; three sisters, Dorothy Buchan, Theresa Szczeypski and Joan Ferraro; and four brothers, Tony, Danny, Ernie, and Paul Leda. Funeral Services will take place at 12:00 noon, Wednesday, December 2, 2015 in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery. A visitation will take place from 10:00 a.m. until noon Wednesday in the funeral home. Chester was a graduate of South Bend Catholic High School. He was a Korean War Army Veteran serving from 1952-1954. Chester was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. #360. He was a softball umpire for 33 years for Notre Dame, Bethel College, and all the local high schools. He was an umpire and chief A.S.A. for Mishawaka. He was also the manager for the Uniroyal Softball Teams for 12 years. Chester was an avid Notre Dame, Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears Fan.
