Mishawaka-Charles B. Van Tornhout, 84, passed away on Saturday, May 19 at his home in Texas. Charles was born on December 24, 1927 in Mishawaka to Julius and Marie (Tessely) Van Tornhout. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robert.

On October 5, 1950 in St. Bavo Catholic Church he married the former Marion Vandervelt. Surviving are his loving wife of over 61 years, Marion; daughter, Christine (Wayne) Abke of East Bernard, TX; sons, Reni (Karen) Van Tornhout of Mishawaka, Michael (Deborah) Van Tornhout of Edwardsburg, MI and Charles J. (Cynthia) Van Tornhout of South Bend; 11 grandchildren, Renee, Sandra, Brett, Rachael, Timothy, Carrie, Charles J., Tracey, Joleena, Cory and Ariell; 16 great grandchildren.

Charles owned and operated Van Tornhout Masonry and Builders for 35 years. He retired in 1989. He was a member of St. Bavo Catholic Church, Mishawaka and the American Legion #161. Charles was a lifetime area resident. He wintered in Florida and then wintered in Texas. He was a Veteran of the United States Navy, serving his country during WWII and the Korean Conflict. Visitation will be on Thursday, May 24 from 3 to 7 p.m. in Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka. Funeral services will be on Friday, May 25 at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral home with Rev. Barry England officiating. Contributions of flowers accepted. However in lieu of flowers please make contributions to American Legion Post 161, 133 E Mishawaka Ave, Mishawaka, IN 46545. Military Rites by VFW Post 360/American Legion #161 burial team will be at the funeral home.
