SOUTH BEND - Elgin W. "Sarge" Nowacki, 92, of South Bend, passed away at 8:26 a.m. on Friday, June 25th, in Fountainview Place of Mishawaka. Elgin was born on August 20, 1917, in South Bend, to Frank and Pelagia "Blanche" (Kujawa) Nowacki. He was a lifelong resident. He retired from Kroger where he was employed as a butcher for 40 years. On November 23, 1946, in St. Adalbert Church, he married Gertrude A. Wolkiewicz, who preceded him in death on December 4, 2009. Also preceding him in death were three sisters, Alexandria Nowacki, Francine Nowacki and Clementine Locsi; five brothers, Edmond, Alexander, Ted, Stanley and John Nowacki; and his son-in-law, Thomas DeRue Sr. Survivors include his daughter, Patricia (Don Nemeth) DeRue-Nemeth of South Bend, IN; two sons, Robert (Rozanne) Nowacki of Granger, IN, and Thomas (Bethel) Nowacki of Mishawaka, IN; four grandchildren, Kenneth (Jessica) Nowacki, Craig (Shelley) Nowacki, Thomas (Jamie) DeRue Jr. and Kylie Nowacki; six great-grandchildren, Ethan, Dawson and Jillian Nowacki, Lucas and Shawn Nowacki, and Brecken DeRue; and three sisters, Leona Bentkowski, Veronica Kopczynski and Helen Ornat, all of South Bend, IN. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, June 28, in St. Adalbert Church. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, where members of the American Legion Pulaski Post #357 will conduct military services. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, where a parish Rosary will be prayed at 4:30 p.m. Elgin was a WW II Army veteran and a member of the American Legion Pulaski Post #357.
