SOUTH BEND - Christine Raker-Nowaczewski, 88, of South Bend passed away at 9:10 PM Thursday, June 26th at Center for Hospice in Elkhart, IN after an extended illness. She was born on January 5, 1926 in Salyersville, KY to the late Linville and Amy (Howard) Whitaker. In 1944, as the former Christine Whitaker, she married William R. Raker who preceded her in death in June 1986. On August 16, 1995, in South Bend she married Stanley Z. Nowaczewski who survives. She is also survived by two daughters, Jerry L. Sturma of Middlebury, IN and Sherry C. (Ronald) Jackey of Mishawaka, IN; two sons, Robert E. (Sassy) Raker of Fort Lauderdale, FL and William L. (Tina) Raker of Utah; two sisters, Pauline (Allan) Rockhill of South Bend, IN and Jean (George) Gyori of Granger, IN, ten grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren, all whom she loved and cherished. Christine was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, William Raker; two sisters, Ailean Davidson and Maxine Szucs; and one brother, Morris Whitaker. Christine loved spending time with her family and especially her sisters. She was a life member of Women's Auxiliary, VFW Post 9820. There will be no visitation. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, June 30th at Sumption Prairie Cemetery. In lieu of flowers please make all memorial contributions to Elkhart Hospice Center, 22579 Old US 20 East, Elkhart, IN 46516.
