SOUTH BEND - Jane M. Eichorst, 76, passed away on Wednesday, September 18, 2013, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Mishawaka, IN. She was born to Paul and Margaret (Rooney) Nelson in Eau Claire, WI. Jane grew up in Eau Claire and spent a lot of time with her beloved cousin and lifelong friend, Lori Baltes. She also lived in Minneapolis, MN, for a short time. Jane attended The College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, MN, for one year, and she completed a med tech program in Des Moines, Iowa. While working as a lab tech in Des Moines, she met John P. Eichorst who was attending Des Moines College of Osteopathy. They married on August 22, 1959, and after John's graduation in 1961, they moved to South Bend, IN, where Jane resided until her death. Jane and John recently celebrated their 54th anniversary. Jane was a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin and grandmother. She dedicated herself to her family and attended every possible extra-curricular event of her children and grandchildren. She loved to babysit, cook, read, hunt for morel mushrooms, garden, play the slots, play board games, lunch with fellow physician's wives, and work on jigsaw puzzles. Throughout her physical challenges and difficulties, Jane demonstrated courage and strength and never complained. She always had an ear to listen to those who sought her counsel and advice. Her kitchen was always a meeting place for her children, family and friends. She had a great sense of humor and enjoyed telling funny stories. Jane volunteered at Eggleston and Clay High schools and spent many hours transporting her children and their friends to various activities. She was a member of the American Osteopathic Association Auxiliary. Jane was preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Margaret Nelson, and a brother, Jerry Nelson. Survivors left to cherish her memory include her devoted husband, John; children, John (Susan) Eichorst II of Anderson, SC, James (Nancy) Eichorst of Granger, IN, Janet (Beverly Leady) Eichorst of Prescott, AZ, Julie (Stephen) Collier of Granger, IN; grandchildren, Cassie, Ryan and Connor Eichorst, and Melissa, Clay and Sarah Collier; and sister, Peg (Chuck) Price of Naperville, IL. The family will receive friends from 4:00 pm-7:00 pm Sunday, September 22nd, at Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Rd, with a Vigil service at 6:30 pm. Funeral Mass will be held Monday, September 23rd, at 11:00 am at Christ the King Catholic Church, 52473 State Route 933, South Bend, IN 46637, followed by lunch in the lower level of the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital , 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105; or to Christ the King Catholic Church.
