SOUTH BEND - Ernest Prentkowski, 87, passed away on Monday, July 20, 2009, at 8:30 p.m. in the Healthwin Specialized Care Facility. Ernest was born on June 3, 1922, in South Bend, to the late Roman and Veronica (Kajzer) Prentkowski. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Joyce, on February 9, 1964. On October 8, 1960, he married Alice (Sobczyk) in South Bend, who survives along with their daughter, Lisa (Bernie) Brennan of Mishawaka; two grandchildren, David and Abigail Brennan; and by two sisters, Dorothy Wozny of South Bend and Geraldine (Edward) Rafferty of Elk Grove, CA. Ernest served in the United State Army and was discharged in 1946. He was a member of VFW Post 8748, American Legion Post 357, Ostomy Club of St. Joseph County and AARP. He was a parishioner of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. He was a Chicago Cubs and Notre Dame football fan; he also enjoyed walking, gardening and crossword puzzles. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, July 23, at 11 a.m. in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to the Mass in the church. ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Road, is assisting the family. Burial at St. Joseph Cemetery, South Bend. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 3526 St. Johns Way, South Bend, IN 46628.
