MISHAWAKA - Robert J. “Bob” Havlik passed away on February 29, 2016, in Mishawaka, Ind. He was 90. Mr. Havlik is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Naujoks) Havlik of 62 years; a son, Christopher Havlik of Phoenix, Ariz.; a daughter, Carol Havlik, also of Phoenix, Ariz.; and a brother, Gerald Havlik of Hudson, Fla. Robert Havlik was born Oct. 13, 1925, to James and Hattie Havlik, and was raised in Berwyn and Cicero, Ill. A childhood encyclopedia and visits to the Chicago World's Fair in 1933 instilled in him a lifelong love for reading science, technology and history, particularly the life of Abraham Lincoln.He was director emeritus of the Architecture and Engineering libraries at the University of Notre Dame. He joined the library faculty in 1973 and retired in 1992. He was also the founding director of the Nova University (now Nova Southeastern University) Library in Davie, Fla. He was also a librarian at Purdue University, Iowa State, and Union Carbide in Buffalo, N.Y. He also worked as a library specialist for the Department of Health Education and Welfare in Washington, DC. While in Washington, he also served as president of the Abraham Lincoln Group of the District of Columbia. He graduated from the Illinois Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1950 and obtained a Master's Degree in Library Science from the University of Illinois in 1951. He was co-author of the book, Argon, Helium and the Rare Gases, as well as author of numerous periodical articles and book reviews on engineering, the history of science and Abraham Lincoln. He also gave lectures on Abraham Lincoln, astronomy and other topics, including the Chicago World's Fair. Robert Havlik was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason and also in the York Rite.
