NILES - Former South Bend resident Norma Jean King, 87, of Niles died at 8:05 a.m. Saturday, February 13th in West Woods of Niles. Mrs. King was born February 22, 1928 in South Bend to the late Melvina (Williams) and Henry I. Grenert and was a lifetime Michiana resident. On October 27, 1945 in South Bend as Norma J. Grenert she married Richard G. King who preceded her in death July 17, 1998. She was also preceded in death by her siblings, Nellie, Deforest, Lisle, and Robert Grenert. She is survived by her daughter, Shirley Witmer of Niles; her son, Richard P. King (Anita) of Union, MI; four grandchildren, Shane R. King (Linda), Casey M. Constant (Shawn), Trena L. Horn (Chuck), and Katie D. McAbee (Brian Polston); nine great-grandchildren, Kirsten, Kyle and Katrina King, Demee, Drew, Drake and Dane Horn, and Avery and Easton McAbee; and one, great-great-granddaughter, Sophia Hostetler. Norma was a beautician and a graduate of Vogue Beauty College. She loved to play BINGO and watch western movies, especially John Wayne. She was a Den Mother for Cub Scouts and served as a foster parent for several children. She loved camping and fishing, especially in southwest Michigan and was an animal lover, missing her last dog, Amanda tremendously. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff of West Woods of Niles and Grace Hospice and caregivers, Bethany, Kevin, and Kelli. She will be greatly missed by her family. The family will receive friends to celebrate Norma's life on Friday, February 19th from 4 until 6 p.m. in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Rd. Cremation will take place at Welsheimer Crematory with burial to follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger.
