SOUTH BEND - Benedict L. "Ben" Kopinski, 98, of South Bend, left this world for eternal life on Wednesday, February 11, 2015, at the Brownsburg Health Care Center, Brownsburg, IN. He was born September 16, 1916, in South Bend, to the late Michael and Helen (Torzewski) Kopinski. On January 11, 1947, he married Natalie Yuhas, who preceded him in death on June 20, 2006. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Esther Spurgin and Leona Kolber, and by a brother, Theodore Kopinski. Ben is survived by his daughter, Sharon (Larry) Waggoner of Brownsburg, IN; two sons, Michael (Michele) Kopinski of Grand Rapids, MI, and John (Lynne) Kopinski of Lagrange, OH; five grandchildren, Nicholas, Matthew and Andrew Waggoner, and Brian and David Kopinski; and by three great-grandchildren, Landon and Anna Waggoner and Samantha Waggoner. Mr. Kopinski worked as a manager of the Studebaker Employee Credit Union and the former Mishawaka Rubber Employees Credit Union (now INOVA Credit Union) before retiring in 1981. He was a United States Army veteran of WW II (6th Armored Division and awarded the Bronze Star), a member of the American Legion Pulaski Post #357, a member of Harvest House, St. Hedwig Holy Name Society, the Board of Directors at Forever Learning and a parishioner of Christ the King Catholic Church, South Bend. He was a lifelong Notre Dame football and Chicago Cubs baseball fan. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 pm Sunday, February 15, 2015, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am Monday at Christ the King Church, with entombment to follow at Highland Cemetery, South Bend.
