Bio:
Joseph Chizar Horvath was born in Kapuvar, Sopron, Hungary to John and Theresa (Csiszar) Horvath on November 10th or 11th of 1879 [LDS Hungarian church records and St. Joseph Co., IN marriage application records]. When he was 19, he came to South Bend, IN [obit published in The South Bend Tribune Sat., Nov 10, 1956]. At the time of the 1910 federal census, he was working in a factory in South Bend. By the time of the 1920 federal census, he had become a farmer in Greene Township of St. Joseph County.

Joseph married twice. His first marriage to Elizabeth "Lizzie" Szabo ended after the 1920 federal census was taken [WPA Indiana, Index to Birth Records
and the 1910 and 1920 federal censuses]. On October 31, 1921, he married Marcella Nemeth [St. Joseph Co., IN marriage records]. She died at the age of 38
in 1931 [obit published in The South Bend Tribune Jan. 14, 1931]. On Friday, Nov. 9, 1956, Joseph Horvath, a retired farmer, who had been living
with his daughter, Mrs. Albert Vellucci of 312 W. 11th St., Mishawaka, IN, died of tuberculosis in Healthwin Hospital in South Bend, IN. His life had ended just
one or two days short of his 77th birthday. The Nemeth Funeral Home handled the arrangements, and he was interred in Fairview Cemetery in Mishawaka. [obit and Fairview Cemetery records]. His survivors included five daughters and three sons: Irene, wife of Albert Vellucci, of Mishawaka; Marie, wife of Karl Everett Koontz; Priscilla, wife of Casimir Kluszynski, Mrs. Elizabeth Crowe; Miss Helen Horvath, Julius Horvath, all of South Bend, IN; Louis Horvath of Buchanan, Michigan; and Joseph Horvath of Michigan [obit and the 1956 South Bend City Directory (the directory helped identify the daughters' given names)].
