South Bend - Robert ” Bob” Gerencser, 70, passed away at 5:04pm Saturday , October 20, 2018 in Memorial Hospital . Robert was born on April 21, 1948 in South Bend to Steve and Sally (Sigiowski) Gerencser. On September 24, 1966 he married Shirley Borkowski. Robert was preceded in death by his wife Shirley Gerencser (Borkowski) in 1974 and stepson Thomas Chrapliwy. Surviving are his lifelong companion of 47 years. Shirley Chrapliwy. His sons Robert( Mellissa) Gerencser of South Bend, Thomas (Trish) Gerencser of South Bend, Sister Pat (Jim) Childs of Galien Mi, brothers Steve(Sue) Gerencser of South Bend, Jim (Diane) Gerencser of Fort Wayne, Dave (Sally) Gerencser of Bristol, IN , half-sister Betsy Stofel of Columbia TN, stepdaughter Shelley ( Randy) Huff of New Carlisle, IN. Nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Bob retired from Smurfit - Stone Container prior to retirement he worked alongside his brother as a machinist at AMT. His most interesting job was being a cannon maker for South Bend Replica. “Bob” was one of the most kind, hard working, and loving man on this earth. He cared for his family. He always had a positive attitude and could fix anything. All of the neighbor kids would bring their bikes for Bob to repair. Most evenings Bob could be found at the Chain O Lakes airport with family and friends. He was an avid aviation enthusiast and this was his happy place. He loved to fly his airplane and take others up with him. Visitation will be Thursday October 25th from 2-4pm at Zahoran Funeral Home 1826 S.
