[N757] He's a good American -- and proud Democrat

I feel a response and a rebuttal is in order to a letter written by Dave Wyckoff that appeared in the Aug. 31 Tribune. Wyckoff's letter ended "I don't understand how a good American can even be a Democrat." I consider myself a good American who is a Democrat. I am 83 years old, a Korean veteran, married to the same woman for 61 years and retired after working for the same company for 421/2 years. I have lived during the terms of 14 United States presidents; therefore I feel I can speak with some knowledge and experience. I vote Democratic because I prefer the Democrats' positions on Social Security, Medicare, gun background checks and gun safety measures, immigration reform, women's rights, education and the Affordable Care Act, to name a few issues. I could never vote for a party in which 235 GOP House members and 41 GOP Senators signed a secret pledge to a man named Grover Norquist. Norquist is a lobbyist who is funded by plutocrats who want to control and manipulate our democracy. GOP members who signed that pledge sold themselves, their votes and their honor and integrity to Norquist and his rich supporters.
