SOUTH BEND - Leah, beloved daughter of Julius and Gertrude Sarah Peska, passed away peacefully early Friday morning at Morning View Assisted Living surrounded by family members. She was born September 29, 1933 in Schoenpreissen, Czechoslovakia. She was preceded in death by her son, Michael Hagen and husband, Robert (Rafael) Kabel. She is survived by sons, David Hagen, Cape Coral, FL, Robert Kabel, Memphis, TN, and daughter, Sharon Jackson, Northfield, MN. Her legacy lives on through her 46 direct descendants including children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. She was a Holocaust survivor and her memories were chronicled in her book Plague of Darkness (Published by Indiana University Wolfsohn Press). The love of life was her family. She worked hard to insure her family valued Jewish traditions and education. Throughout her years in the South Bend Jewish community she was an active member and volunteer of many Jewish organizations including Hebrew Orthodox, Midwest Torah Center, Sinai Synagogue, Haddassah, and the Jewish Federation of St Joe Valley. Known by many as “Grandma”, her unique noble and regal character will be missed by many. Her flame will continue to burn brightly from all of her family who will miss her dearly. Leah's family is also deeply appreciative of those who assisted with her end-of-life care, the caregivers of Morning View Assisted Living and Heart to Heart Hospice. Donations can be made to the Leah Kabel Holocaust Education Memorial Fund at the Jewish Federation of St. Joseph Valley.
