Bernard Wentland
April 5, 1925 - July 25, 2007
SOUTH BEND - Bernard S. Wentland, 82, passed away at 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 25, in Memorial Hospital. Bernard was born on April 5, 1925, in South Bend, to the late Sylvester and Lillian Wentland. On October 18, 1947, Bernard married Mary Alice Ewald. She survives along with their children, Beverly (Mark) Daugherty of South Bend, Susan (Mike) Gerrish of Greenwood, IN, James Wentland of Edwardsburg, and Marcia (Chris) Wagner of Granger; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; sister, Lucille (Joe) Dangelo; and brothers, Eugene (Phyllis) and Daniel (Roseanne). Bernard served in the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. Owens during World War II. He was employed by Studebaker for ten years until its closing in 1964. He retired from the South Bend Community School Corporation after 33 years as a painter. He was a member of VFW and American Legion Post 357. He was an avid Cubs fan and bowler. He was the first to show up for any project needed by family, friends, or fellow parishioners. Bernie was always the first picked for horseshoes and proudly displayed his Senior Game's Gold Medal. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, July 29, in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Road, South Bend, where a Rosary will be prayed at 4 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday, July 30, in Christ the King Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, South Bend. Memorial contributions may be made to Christ the King Catholic Church.
