Robert D. Birk, 48, of Cheryl Dr., Granger, passed away at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 18, in Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis, IN after a courageous five month battle of complications while awaiting a heart transplant. Robert was born on November 5, 1955, in Mishawaka as the son of Devon and Mary (Lehner) Birk. On July 23, 1977 in St. Pius X Church, Granger, he married the former Kelly Whitfield who survives along with their children, Ryan L. Birk of Indianapolis and Lisa M. Birk of Granger; his parents Devon and Mary of Granger; a brother Michael E. (Cindy M. (Jaskiewicz) Birk of St. Joseph Michigan; A sister Sharon K. (Randy) Lawton of Granger; his grandmother Evelyn Lehner of Granger; Nieces Ann Horein, Kayla Wisler, Amy Birk, and nephews Lee Wisler, Brent Horein and Mitchell Birk. Robert was a Penn High School graduate of 1974. He worked for Kessington Machine Products in Elkhart, after spending 21 years at Allied Signal in South Bend. Robert was a loving father and family man. He was an excellent machinist, welder and handyman.He loved working at Kessington Machine Products with his close friends; He loved to restore vehicles including his '57 Chevy. Robert was a former band mechanic for the Penn High School Marching Band, and he loved to volunteer for the PHS Marching Band. Robert also loved his Schnauzer dogs. He was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church. For those who knew him, his sense of humor and smile and his love of helping others will be greatly missed. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. on Friday February 20 in Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at Noon in St. Pius X Catholic Church, Granger, on Saturday February 21 with visitation one hour prior in the church with Rev. William Schooler officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger.The family requests in lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Robert Birk Memorial Fund at First Source Bank for his children's college education.
