Mishawaka - Walter W. Stachowicz, 87, passed away at 10:05pm on Friday, March 23, 2012 in his home after a courageous battle with cancer. Walter was born on April 28, 1924 in Kielce Poland to the late Thomas and MaryAnn Stachowicz. Walter is also preceded in death by a grandchild, Abigail; and sisters, Zosia and Kasia Stachowicz. On January 5, 1952 in South Bend, Walter married Genevieve (Blacharski). She survives along with daughter, Juliet Marie Stachowicz of Sacramento, CA; brothers, Ed (Catherine) Stachowicz of Lafayette, IN, and John Stachowicz of New York, NY; grandchildren, Jonathan (Michelle) Stachowicz of Lafayette, IN, Sara Stachowicz of Lafayette, IN, Emily Stachowicz of Grand Rapids, MI, Adam Stachowicz of Lafayette, IN; great-grandchild, Elijah Stachowicz; sister, Helen Swistek of Poland; along with several nieces and nephews. Walter worked for Uniroyal (formally Ball Band) for 31 years before retiring in 1986 and was the owner of S&J Green Thumb Nursery on Beech Rd in Mishawaka for 17 years. Walter was a parishioner at Queen of Peace Catholic Church. He was a member of the former Hallers Post Polish Veterans Association, and of P.N.A. He loved to hunt rabbits and quail, fish with his grandchildren, mushroom hunt and had a green thumb. Visitation will be from 11:00am to 1:00pm on Saturday, March 31, 2012 in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Rd., where a Rosary will be prayed at 12:30. A Funeral Liturgy will begin at 1:00pm on Saturday, March 31, 2012 in the Funeral Home. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care 111 Sunnybrook Ct. South Bend, IN 46637.
