South Bend Tribune 5/11/2007
SOUTH BEND - Joseph P. Nyikos, 80, of South Bend, died at 6:10 p.m. Saturday evening in St. Paul's Retirement Community. Joseph was born on July 30, 1926, in South Bend, to Stephan and Anna (Bella) Nyikos and was a lifelong resident. He graduated from Central High School and served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War. On August 23, 1947, in South Bend, he married Elizabeth (Betty) Horvath, who preceded him in death on October 10, 1998, along with four of his seven sisters and brothers. Joseph is survived by a daughter, Judith A. (Thomas) Allen of Cedar Lake, Indiana; two sons, Robert E. (Patricia) Nyikos of Las Vegas, NV, and Joseph R. Nyikos of South Bend; a sister, Theresa (Donald) Yates of South Bend; two brothers, Stephan (Julie) of Broken Arrow, OK, and Michael (Barbara) of Elgin, IL; six grandchildren, Eileen Eady, Thomas Allen Jr., Noreen, David, Jennifer, and Gregory Nyikos; three great-grandchildren, Tamzen Allen, and Logan and Hunter Eady. Joseph worked as an electrician and retired from the South Bend Community School Corporation. In his retirement, he was an avid fisherman, cook, and gardener. He loved his family and his dogs (also "granddogs"). His outgoing personality and sense of humor made it easy for people to get close to him. He will be dearly missed. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 12, in Hickey Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, 3516 E. Jefferson Blvd., South Bend, where friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today. Interment will take place at a later date in St. Joseph Valley memorial Park, Granger. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice. Hickey Funeral Home handled arrangements.
