[N10695] Mary Alice Chmielowiec
Aug. 15, 1930 - May 30, 2015
SOUTH BEND - Mary Alice Chmielowiec, 84, gently passed into God's loving arms on Saturday, May 30, 2015, in her home after a short illness. She died in the presence of her family while holding her daughter's hand. She was born on Aug. 15, 1930, to Henry and Harriet (Pianowski) Klawinski in South Bend. She attended St. Hedwig's School and graduated from South Bend Catholic High School. On October 24, 1964, in St. Hedwig's Church, she married Andrew Chmielowiec, who preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death was her sister, Sr. Francesca Klawinski, O.S.F., of St. Louis, MO, with whom she was very close. She is survived by her loving canine companion Mocha; daughter, Therese (Gary) Blacketor of South Bend; sons, Jim Mellowitz of Indianapolis, IN, and Dave (Judi) Chmielowiec of Dallas, TX; grandsons, Billy and Michael Blacketor and Keller Mellowitz; brother, Thomas (Jackie) Klawinski of Granger, IN; Irene Grzeszczyk, who was like a sister to her; niece, Myra (James) Sweeney; nephew, Keith (Tracey) Klawinski; great-niece, Delaney Klawinski; and great-nephews, Darby & Aidan Sweeney and Logan Klawinski. Also mourning her loss are her granddogs, Nini and Joey, who loved her very much. She was previously employed by the St. Joseph County Health Department and St. Joseph's High School where she worked in the cafeteria for many years until her retirement. She was a member of Corpus Christi Parish where she belonged to the Altar & Rosary Society, participated in the weekly Holy Hour and ARISE in Christ programs, and served as a Eucharistic Minister for the sick. She was also a member of St. Hedwig's Golden Cluster and Altar & Rosary Society, and she regularly volunteered to clean the church. In addition, she was a longtime member of the former Association of St. Joseph for the Holy Cross Brothers. Mary Alice was a loving mother and grandmother who adored God and cherished her family. She always carried a Rosary with her and had a special devotion to St. Therese, after whom she named her daughter. She had a fun sense of humor, loved Notre Dame football, and enjoyed keeping an active social life. Mary Alice treated everyone with kindness, always had a smile, and only saw the good in all the people she met. She made this world a better place just by being part of it. In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, June 6, 2015, at 11 am at Corpus Christi Church. Visitation will begin at 9:30 am in the church with a Rosary preceding the Mass. Private entombment will take place at St. Joseph Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Hedwig's Church or to Pet Refuge of Michiana. I love you Mom...today, tomorrow and always. Please watch over us.
