SOUTH BEND - Veronica Puchala, 96, passed away Monday, February 6, 2017, in Hospice House of St. Joseph County after a brief illness. Veronica was born January 12, 1921, in Cieszna, Poland, and is one of 12 children born to Michael and Rose (Blaznik) Praciak. On November 10, 1940, Veronica married her loving husband, Mieczyslaw “Matt” Puchala. Veronica grew up in Poland and learned several languages before leaving Poland for America during WW II. It was during this journey that a son was killed by the Nazis. Veronica's faith in God remained strong and helped to carry her and her family through those difficult years and continued until she was called home to our Lord. Veronica found a new home in South Bend, IN, with the help of the Polish Catholic Sisters of Holy Cross. She was a parishioner at Christ the King Catholic Church. She supported Logan Industries, most notably by donating hundreds of homemade Easter Lamb Cakes as a fundraiser over the years. Veronica was an excellent cook, especially during the holidays, bringing the Polish traditional fare to family and friends. Veronica loved tending to her flowers and was able to breath life back into the most wounded plants. She also enjoyed sewing, knitting, and crafting. She was a member of the Polish Women's Association and retired as an inspector at Sobol Plastics Company. Veronica was preceded in death by her husband, Matt, her son, Ted Puchala, her infant sons, Franus and Manus, and her grandson, Matthew McWilliams. Veronica is survived by her children, Barbara (Howard) Lenhardt of Niles, MI, Dorothy (Bill) Ault of Ontario, CA, Christine (Tim) Fox of South Bend, IN, Jeanette McWilliams of South Bend, IN; six grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Visitation for Veronica will be 5-8 pm Monday, February 13, 2017, at St. Joseph Funeral Home, 824 S. Mayflower Rd., with a Rosary to be prayed at 7:30 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am Tuesday, February 14, 2017, at Christ the King Catholic Church, with visitation at 9:30 am in the church. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Christ the King Catholic Church, 52473 SR 933, South Bend, IN 46637.
