MISHAWAKA - Frank E. Matthews, 84, passed away on Monday, July 12, in Morningside Nursing and Memory Center. Frank was born August 25, 1925, in South Bend, to the late Frank and Marie (Guilfoyle) Matthews. Frank is survived by his wife of 62 years, Cecelia; two daughters, Rachel Matthews and Karen (Don) Grove of Minneapolis, MN; son, Marc Matthews of Mishawaka; two grandchildren, Matthew and Austin Grove; and best friend, Everett Steen.Frank was preceded in death by son, Brian; brother, David; and sister, Helen Jane. Frank served in the US Navy in WW II, graduated from the Navy Submarine School, served in the Philippines, and V12 program at Notre Dame. On June 26, 1948, in St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, Frank married Cecelia (Cece) Kapalczynski. He attended the University of Notre Dame, graduated from the University of Denver and received his master's degree from Michigan State University. In the early 1950s he was a partner with his brother David in M&M Motors. He was an educator in the Penn Harris Madison school system, where he taught math and physics, and was chairman of the Math/Science Department at Penn High School until his retirement in 1982. He started the Penn High Ski Club, and was past president of Penn Harris Madison Teachers Association. Frank was a longtime member of St. Pius X Catholic Church and a member of the Elks. He was always very active, loved downhill skiing, water skiing, sailing, real estate and the stock market. He had penchant for traveling with his family, visiting most of the United States and trips to Eastern and Western Europe.Many thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff at the South Bend Clinic, St. Joseph Regional Medical Center and Memorial Hospital. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Saturday, July 17th, in Saint Pius X Catholic Church, 52553 Fir Road, Granger, where friends may visit with the family one hour prior to Mass in the church. In Frank’s memory, contributions may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, Northern Indiana Chapter, PO Box 4204, South Bend, IN 46634.
