Anthony Stephen Szumiesz, Sr., 75, passed away unexpectedly, surrounded by his loving wife and children, on Wednesday morning, October 30, 2019 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Mishawaka, IN. He was born on August 17, 1944 in Manchester, NH, to Anthony and Anastasia (Karras) Szumiesz, both of whom preceded him in death. On March 31, 1990 in Delaware, OH, Anthony married the former Karen Maudine Craven, who survives. In addition to his loving wife of nearly 30 years, Anthony is survived by his sons, Anthony S. (Peggy) Szumiesz, Jr., of South Carolina, and Kurt Szumiesz of Alaska; step-daughter, Tammie R. (Butch) Bernard of Panama City, FL; step-sons, James L. Oberle of Plain City, OH, and Timothy S. Oberle of Delaware, OH; thirteen grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister, Peggy Szumiesz of Pensacola, FL; brother, Eddie (Lucille) Szumiesz of Manchester, NH; and three nieces and nephews. Anthony was employed as director of automotive engineering at Dana Corporation in Mishawaka, IN. He served his country honorably in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. Funeral services for Anthony will be held at 1:00pm on Tuesday, November 5, 2019 at Palmer Funeral Home-Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend, IN. Pastor C.F. Rainey of Lone Star Baptist Church will officiate. Friends may visit with the family from 6:00-8:00pm on Monday, November 4th at the funeral home. Anthony will be laid to rest in the mausoleum at Forest Lawn Memorial Cemetery in Panama City, Florida, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in memory of Anthony may be donated to any military foundation to assist present and former members of the United States military.
