SOUTH BEND - H. Stephen Nye, 71, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away at 12:55 a.m. Monday, September 8, 2014, in Morning View Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Stephen was born on November 17, 1942, in Buffalo, New York, to Harry and Bernice (Zamorski) Nye, and had lived in South Bend since he was seven years old. Stephen was the owner of EIS Environmental Engineers in South Bend. On April 3, 1998, at Diamondhead, Waikiki, Hawaii, on a sailboat, at sunset, he married Judy K. Heritz, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Dawn Nye of South Bend, Indiana, and Jamie (Brian) Downs of Batavia, Ohio; two sons, Todd (Rochelle) Nye of Durham, North Carolina, & Jason Heritz of Nappanee, Indiana; six grandchildren, Cameron Nye, McKayle Nye, Collin Heritz, Ariana Downs, Rachel Downs and Gabriel Downs; two sisters, Mary Lou (Larry) Vadas-Salyers of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Barbara (Ken) Johnston of South Bend, Indiana; two brothers, David (Penny) Nye and Chris (Mary) Nye of Naperville, Illinois. A private Mass will be held at a later date. Stephen was a 1960 graduate of St. Joseph High School. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree from I.U. Bloomington and Master's Degree from the University of Notre Dame. He received a P.E. (Professional Engineer Certificate) from the State of Indiana. He was a Past Chair of the Independent Harbor Group, New Buffalo, Michigan, and Past Chair of Computer Information Services Advisory Board at Ivy Tech Community College. He was a Class D Certified Wastewater Treatment Operator and a Certified RAB Environmental Provisional Auditor. Stephen was a life member of the United States Sail and Power Squadron. He was a licensed multi-engine instrument rated pilot, a licensed Ham Radio operator and amateur photographer. Stephen was an avid sailor, scuba diver, snow skier, body builder, and loved to make gourmet food with his wife and travel. Stephen was an amazing businessman, friend, husband and family man, and very proud of his children and grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's and Dementia Services of Northern Indiana or Harbor Light Hospice. Kaniewski Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
