SOUTH BEND - J. George Karras, 79, of South Bend, died Wednesday, April 25, 2012 in Hospice House following a brief illness. George was born October 22, 1932 in South Bend to the late Marika (Kakoulidis) and Pete Karras and was a lifetime area resident. On November 9, 1980 he married the love of his life, Debbie Rayder, who survives. Also surviving are cousins, Mary Faye (Bill) Shaia of Sarasota, FL and their daughter, Kareme Shaia and Andy Karras of Raleigh, NC; brothers-in-law, Bob (Lucy) Caryer of Tampa, FL and Gene (Nancy) Caryer of Fort Wayne, IN; and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by an aunt, Eva Kakoulidis of Piraeus, Greece; cousins, John (Kety) Kakoulidis of Pondeli, Greece, Nora (Vangelis) Tsironis of Voula, Greece, and Katerina (Kosta) Karlis Piraeus and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents; and uncles, Steve (Nina) Karras, Anesti (Anastasia) Karras, and Alekos Kakoulidis. After graduating from high school he attended Indiana University where he pursued studies in the medical field. He served in the military at Scott Air Force Base and passed up a chance to attend West Point. Although he had the opportunity to go to West Point he decided to return to I.U. to finish his degree. George was a member of the Elks Lodge, Orak Shrine Temple, Loyal Order of Moose, the Veterans of America, and many other organizations. He was one of the founders of the Summit Club and was a past president of the Indiana Beer Wholesalers. He was a very active member of St. Andrew Greek Orthodox Church and was a past president of the church board and very involved with the Building Committee and many others throughout his life. In 1983, during the opening of the new church he was honored by the "St. Paul's Medal" given by the Bishop of Chicago. This award is the highest honor from the Arch Diocese that a lay person can receive. George enjoyed sailing and always talked about his days on Eagle Lake. He loved to bowl and was involved in many leagues. In later years he enjoyed working on their pond and enjoying his wife's garden and flowers. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 28th in St. Andrew Greek Orthodox Church, 52455 N. Ironwood Rd. with Rev. George Konstantopoulos officiating. Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the church on Friday from 4 until 7 p.m. where a Trisagion service will be held at 7:00, and also from 10:00 a.m. Saturday until the time of service.
