WSBT learned Friday night through the Allen County coroner's office that Esther Borowski died after being transferred from a South Bend hospital to Fort Wayne. The first 911 call came in at 11:18 p.m. from a female caller who told the dispatcher about the woman inside the home. A second female caller informed another dispatcher her boyfriend was going inside to try and save the trapped woman. St. Joseph County Police Detective Randy Kaps was on his way from the scene of a shooting to the sheriffs department to follow up with other detectives. When he heard the dispatch, he realized he was about three blocks away from Falcon and Ford the intersection where the home is located. Kaps crawled through thick smoke, trying to find her. Kaps said he pointed South Bend Officer Nick McKinley in the right direction. He went right into that room, charged right in there and I went out, took a couple breaths. He said he had her, he was on his way out, Kaps continued. South Bend Police Officers Ryan Hiipakka, Gregory Howard and Brandon Stec also helped. Esther's husband Chester was listed in fair condition on Friday. He was also being treated for smoke inhalation and burns, fire investigators said. According to South Bend Fire Marshal Federico Rodriguez, the fire started in the basement of the home but investigators are not sure how it ignited. They estimate it did about $10,000 in damage.
