SOUTH BEND - Michael S. “Big Mike” Szymkowiak, passed away at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 13, 2016 in his residence. Michael was born on February 19, 1955 in South Bend, IN, to Casmier and Helen (Bensley) Szymkowiak, both of whom have preceded him in death. He was also preceded by his brother, Richard Szymkowiak on August 6, 2015. Mike is survived by his three sisters, Sandra Walker, Rosemary (Donald) Fox and Linda Szymkowiak all of South Bend; his nieces and nephews, Karen (Jorge) Silva, Craig Walker, Joseph Fox and Jessica (Pedro) Almazan; and his great-nieces and nephews, Tyler Walker, Eric Silva, Julianna, Madelynn Fox and Lilyanna Almazan. Michael retired in 2000 from the City of South Bend Water Department, where he was a heavy equipment operator for 26 years. Michael enjoyed being on his computer, his truck and listening to country music. Cremation has taken place with burial of his cremains to take place at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park in Granger. His family will have a private committal service at a later date. Bubb Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements.
