SOUTH BEND - Stephen S. Marozsan, 86, passed into glory at 10:15 pm on Tuesday, February 7, 2012, in the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center after a lengthy illness. The beloved husband of Adeline (Nowak) Marozsan and son of the late John and Mary (Koszhvu) Marozsan, he was born on Christmas Eve 1925 in South Bend. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Joseph and John Jr. On August 26, 1950, he married Adeline Nowak in South Bend, who survives. Mr. Marozsan was known nationally as an outspoken advocate for the rights of veterans. He served with the U.S. Navy in Alaska's Aleutian Islands in World War II and subsequently with the Navy Reserve. He suffered a disabling injury during his Reserve service, an event which changed his life and led to his involvement in veterans' affairs. In recent years, he formed the Sea Dogs, a group of Michiana Navy veterans who met regularly for lunch and to reminisce. In civilian life, Mr. Marozsan was the founder of a successful nightclub. He was active in the Democrat Party in St. Joseph County and was a candidate for City Councilman. Mr. Marozsan was also a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Parish at Notre Dame, where he sang in the choir and was famous for his goulash suppers and passionate support for the Fighting Irish. Over the years, he befriended countless Notre Dame players, students and alumni. In addition to his wife of 61 years, Adeline, he is survived by his beloved brother, Nicholas(Dolores) of South Bend; three goddaughters, Pamela (Daniel) Miller of Mishawaka, Marcia (Tony) Reinders of South Bend and Teresa (Robert) Smith of Haymarket, Virginia; nephews, Karl (Mary) and David (Debbie) Marozsan, all of South Bend, and Captain George (Audrey) Marozsan, USN (ret.) of Birmingham, Alabama; and two nieces, Marie (Dr. James) Douglas of South Bend and Tina (Terry) Corley of Oville, Texas. Survivors also include ten grandnieces and grandnephews, and nine great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews. Funeral arrangements are being directed by the ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Notre Dame's Basilica of the Sacred Heart at 9:30 am on Tuesday, February 14, 2012. A viewing will precede the service, beginning at 8:00 am to 9:00 am at St. Joseph Funeral Home. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. The family has requested no flowers. Memorial contributions should be directed to Pet Refuge, 2300 W. 6th, Mishawaka, IN 46544. Mr. Marozsan was one of a kind, a man who loved mightily and fought fiercely. His passing will leave the world a quieter, less interesting place. He will be missed by many people who knew and loved him. Condolences for the family may be made at www.sjfh.net.
