SOUTH BEND - Walter Kasznia, 95, passed away Sunday, December 7, 2014 at home. Walter was born June 23, 1919 in South Bend to the late Jozef and Janina (Trzaskowski) Kasznia. He grew up on the farm in Crumstown and then later served his country in the United States Army from 1943-1946, fighting in WWII on both the European and Pacific Theaters. He epitomized the greatest generation. After coming home from the war in 1946 Walter married Loretta Krupnik on November 28, Thanksgiving Day. They were married for 64 years when his loving wife preceded him in death in 2011. They had four daughters together, Cynthia (Fred) Scott of South Bend, Diane (Jack) Zimmerman of Syracuse, and Vicky Kasznia of South Bend, who survive him. His daughter, Connie Makowski preceded him in death in 2009. Walter is also survived by his son-in-law, Dale Makowski of Edwardsburg. Six grandchildren survive him: Timothy (Lisa) Scott of New Carlisle, Thomas (Mandy) Scott of Fishers, Anthony Scott of South Bend, Ryan W. (Chris) Makowski of Saipan, Mariana Islands, Kimberly (Ryan) Hoffman of Santa Monica, CA and Lance Zimmerman of Indianapolis; along with four great-grandchildren, Derek, Conner, James W. and Stella Scott. Walter is also survived by two sisters, Evalyn Liszewski and Pearl Czarnecki, both of South Bend. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Irene Janiszewski and Helen Niespodziany. Walter's values were God, family and country. He worked for Studebaker's until they closed in 1963. He retired from the O'Brien Paint Company after 20 years of service. Walter was a parishioner of Holy Family Catholic Church. He was a member of the St. Joseph Young Men's Society, American Legion Post #284, and the Crumstown Conservation Club. Visitation for Walter will be 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm Wednesday, December 10, 2014 at ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Rd., where a Rosary will be prayed at 4:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, December 11, at 11:00 am in Holy Family Catholic Church, with Rev. Charles Herman officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.
