SOUTH BEND - Chester S. Bukowski, Sr., 97, passed away at 8:45pm on Wednesday, September 28, 2011 in Golden Living Center at Fountainview Nursing Home, Mishawaka after a short illness. Chester was born on April 18, 1914 in South Bend to the late Walter and Maria (Mucha) Bukowski. He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Wanda Janiak, Eugenia Moskwinski, Elizabeth Svatos, Louis Bukowski and Walter Bukowski; and by his granddaughter, Ann Marie Modlin. On April 13, 1949 he married Adeline (Cytacki); she survives along with their three children, Sandra (Robert) Ecenbarger Sr. of Ft. Wayne, Christine (David) Modlin of Mishawaka and Chester S. Bukowski, Jr.; four grandchildren, Robert Ecenbarger, Jr., Amelia Rose Ecenbarger, Cassandra Mindy Ecenbarger all of Ft. Wayne, and Stephanie Modlin of West Lafayette. Chester worked for Studebaker/Wheelabrator from which he retired in 1981. He honorably served his country as a Sergeant in the United States Army during WWII, he had 44 months service on the Islands with 5 years total service and belonged to the Veterans of Quarter Master Corp. He was a member of Z.B. Falcons and a parishioner of St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church. Chester loved bowling, the outdoors and was an avid gardener. Visitation will be from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Sunday, October 2, 2011 in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Road, where a Rosary will be prayed at 4:30 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Monday, October 3, 2011 in St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church. Entombment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's & Dementia Services of Northern Indiana, 922 E. Colfax Ave., South Bend, IN 46617 or to American Cancer Society of North Central Indiana, 130 Red Coach Dr., Mishawaka, IN 46545. Condolences for the family may be made at www.sjfh.net
