Penelope (Gallos) Poulos
June 24, 1926 ~ February 24, 2023 (age 96)
Penelope Poulos, 96, of South Bend, IN passed away on Friday, February 24, 2023. She was born on June 24, 1926 in Minneapolis, MN to the late Paris and Hariklia (Papastephanou) Gallos. She was preceded in death by Thomas Poulos, her husband of 66 years, whom she married on April 27, 1947. Also preceding her were siblings Reverend George, John, and Mary Gallos. She is survived by her children: Theodore (Suzanne) Poulos, of St. Thomas, Ontario; Andrea Miller of Munster, IN and Marina (Charles) Carlin of South Bend, IN; grandchildren Alexis (Robert) Gutierrez, Nicole Miller, and Jeff Power; great-grandchildren Laura, David and Maria Gutierrez; her godson, and several nieces and nephews. Penelope attended Teachers College of Connecticut and taught Sunday School for 50 years at Greek Orthodox Churches, spending countless Saturday afternoons preparing Liturgy lessons. She loved English and Greek words and taught the Greek language to many students and travelers. Despite a distaste for numbers, Penelope had her own system of counting all the Palm Sunday Crosses made by students, and took it quite seriously! As competition to Ann Landers, Mrs. Poulos was often sought out by friends for her sage advice. Additionally, she channeled Amy Vanderbilt and Emily Post to rule on matters of etiquette. Ever the hostess, her cupboards and freezer overflowed with homemade refreshments to offer guests and contribute to meetings. Much to her delight, Penny enjoyed traveling the world with her husband, who represented Uniroyal at national and international conferences. She would study the language and location of their destinations to enjoy and experience them to the fullest extent. The family wishes to thank Senior Helpers, Home by the Dome and Hospice for their companionship and excellent care of Penelope. Funeral services will be held Friday at noon at Sts. Peter and Paul Serbian Orthodox Church, 59248 Keria Trail, South Bend, IN 46614. Friends may visit with the family on Thursday from 6:00 - 8:00 pm (Memorial Service at 7:00 pm) in the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan St, South Bend, IN. Contributions in memory of Penelope Poulos may be made to the Sts. Peter & Paul Serbian Orthodox Church or The Center for Hospice Care, 501 Comfort Place, Mishawaka, IN 46545.
