M. M. Brees
Melvel M. Brees, 88, of Edina, died at 9:12 Saturday morning (June 24, 1978) in a Kirksville hospital where he had been a patient since June 13. Born March 18, 1890 in Hardin county, Iowa, he was the son of Charles E. and Mary Ellen Brattain Brees. On April 1, 1917 at Baring, he married Irma Mae Richardson who preceded him in death on Nov. 18, 1976. Also preceding him in death was a great-grandson. Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. William (Iris) Moore of Edina, Mrs. Robert (Dorothy) Snell of Knox City, Mrs. John (Helen) McElfresh of Edina; Mrs. Roland (Bonnie) Switalski of South Bend, Indiana and Mrs. Charles (Joann) McFarland of Baring; ten grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. At an early age, Mr. Brees moved with his parents to the Green City community, where he lived until 1915 when he moved to Hurdland. He attended Green City High School and Northeast Missouri State University. For several years he taught in schools in Sullivan county. Later he had produce companies in Hurdland, Baring and Edina.For two terms, Mr. Brees served as Knox County Collector. He also owned and operated the Gibbons Hotel in Edina for a few years. For over 30 years, Mr. Brees was in the Real Estate business and insurance business, retiring in 1975. He was a member of the Green City United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon (June 26, 1978) at 2 o'clock in Hudson-Rimer Funeral Chapel in Edina. Entombment will be in a Linville Mausoleum in Edina.
