SOUTH BEND, IN Gordon Russell "Corky" Unger, 67 years old, residing on E. Ewing Avenue, South Bend, passed away at 3:55 p.m. on Wednesday, September 4, 2002, at the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, South Bend, after an extended illness. Mr. Unger was born on December 28, 1934, in LaPorte, to the late Robert and Martha (Scheffer) Unger. One daughter, Debra Christine Unger; two sisters, Louise Robertson and Ruthann Hootman; and three brothers, Melvin, Robert and Bill Unger, all preceded in death. On November 15, 1958, in LaPorte, Gordon married Elfrieda H. Schuller, who survives.
Along with his wife, Elfrieda, of 44 years, survivors include one daughter, Angelika (Gerald) Moffett of Apache Junction, AZ; four sons, Mike (Julie) Unger of Osceola, Robert "Bobby" (Laura) Unger of Mishawaka, Donny Unger of South Bend and Danny (Debbie) Unger of South Bend; twelve grandchildren, Cecil Porman, Chrissy Bonek, Michelle Porman, Brandon Unger, Brittany Unger, Lauren Unger, Cassie Unger, Anthony Unger, Jessica Unger, Britteny Unger, Robert Unger Jr. and Dakota Unger; four great-grandchildren, Austin Porman, Haley Porman, Brent Allen Bonek and Zachary Bonek; and three sisters, Phyllis Ainsworth of LaPorte, Mary Williams of LaPorte and Janis Nickerson of Rolling Prairie. Mr. Unger served his country with the United States Army. He retired from Easy Heat Wire Craft in New Carlisle after 40 years of employment. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 7, 2002, at the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan Street, South Bend. Rev. Brian Beeks, pastor of Osceola United Methodist Church, will officiate. Military gravesite services and burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend. Friends may visit with the family from 4 to 8 p.m. today, September 6, at the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, South Bend. Contributions in memory of Gordon Russell Unger may be donated to the American Cancer Society, 535 W. Edison Road, Mishawaka, IN 46545.
