GRANGER - Steve J. Gruber, 89, passed away at 8:45 am Tuesday, February 2, 2016, in the Brookdale Senior Living Center. Steve was born on April 1, 1926, in South Bend, to John and Helen (Horvath) Gruber. He was the owner of Gruber's Maple Lane Barbershop.After retiring from the barbershop, Steve would go to nursing homes to cut hair for his clients. Steve was a member of St. Pius X Church, Clay Township Lions Club, BK Club, Izaak Walton League and the former South Bend Turners and Broken Arrow Bowman. He was an usher for Notre Dame football games and was an avid hunter, fisherman, archer, golfer and card player. On February 7, 1948, in South Bend, he married the former Lillian Koczan, who survives along with a son, Stephen J. (Susan) Gruber, Jr. of Dowagiac, MI. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 am Monday, February 8, 2016, in St. Pius X Church. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery. Family and friends may from 2-6 Sunday in the Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 Kemble Avenue, where a Rosary will be recited at 4:00 pm. There will also be an hour of visitation prior to services in the church. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Pius X Church or the Lions Club.
