SOUTH BEND - Benedict L. Hahaj Sr., 87, of North 28th Street, South Bend, died Thursday morning, Dec. 14, in Hospice House. Ben was a tool-and-die designer in plastics for over 45 years. He worked for Martin Machine, Sobol Plastics and Michiana Mold, and retired from CTS in 1983. Ben was born May 8, 1919, in South Bend, to Walter and Hedwig (Putz) Hahaj, who preceded him in death along with two sisters, Mary and Bernadette, and three brothers, Leonard, Louis and Ray. On June 14, 1941, in South Bend, he married Mary Virginia Bueche, who survives, along with a daughter, Nanette Gundt of South Bend; three sons, Barry L. of Mishawaka, Eugene J. of Fort Wayne and Ben L. Jr. of Berrien Springs, MI; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; one sister, Angela Eudaley of Spokane, Washington; and two brothers, John and Francis Hahaj of South Bend. A memorial Mass will be held in January 2007 in St. Pius X. Catholic Church, Granger. Ben was a member of St. Pius X Parish and was a lifetime member of DAV Chapter 6. Survivors include his wife, Mary V.; daughter, Nanette Gundt of South Bend; sons, Barry L. of Mishawaka, Eugene J. of Ft. Wayne and Ben L. Jr. of Berrien Springs; a sister, Angela Eudaley of Spokane, WA; and two brothers, John and Francis of South Bend.
