SOUTH BEND, IN - Betty Lou Kulwicki, 83, passed away from natural causes on Tuesday, February 23 in her home. She was born in South Bend, IN on January 18, 1938 to her parents, Joseph and Mary (Hadary) Lichkay. She married and divorced Tom Kulwicki; together they had one child, Debbie Kulwicki who married Scott Heirman of Edwardsburg MI. Betty Lou has two grandchildren, Wendy (James) Hurley of Mishawaka, IN and Jennifer Armstrong (Richard Vaughn) of Homosassa Springs, FL. Each of Betty Lou's grandchildren had a child themselves, leaving Betty Lou with two great-grandchildren whom she loved so dearly: her great-granddaughter Hunter Jane Hurley of Mishawaka, IN and her greatgrandson, Connor Vaughn of Homosassa Springs, FL. Betty Lou has two living siblings, Mary Ann McMahan and William Lichkay. Betty joins her other sister, Dorthy Sommer. She worked and retired from Notre Dame after 30 years of cooking. Betty Lou loved and adored her dog Bingo. She loved spending time with her great-granddaughter Hunter Jane, shopping, cooking, breakfast at Bill's place and most of all, late night scary movies. Betty Lou was greatly loved by her family, friends and community. Through the years Betty took in many neighborhood kids and loved them as her own. Betty Lou was known for all her candy jars, catching the nickname “Candy Grandma”. Published in South Bend Tribune on Mar. 10, 2021.
