J.T. KROLL DIES IN HOSPITAL
Ex-Councilman, 51,
Ill Several Months

Joseph T. Kroll, former president of the South Bend Common Council, died at 5:43 p.m. Sunday in St. Joseph's Hospital. He was 51. Mr. Kroll had suffered from a stomach disorder the past several months and was. hospitalized for about three weeks in April. He returned to the hospital Saturday when he suffered from internal bleeding. Mr. Kroll was a member of the Common Council for two terms, representing the city's 2nd District.
His terms ran from 1956 until Dec. 31, 1963. He was president of the Council from 1960 through 1963.
Defeated In 1963 He was defeated for renomination to his Council seat in the 1963 city, primary by Walter Szymkowiak, the present 2nd District councilman. Mr. Kroll ran for the Democratic nomination for Middle District county commissioner in the May 5 primary. Illness prevented him from campaigning actively and he did not win. Mr. Kroll presided over many stormy Council sessions. He was a member of the Council during years when the city was striving to renovate itself and bolster its economic base. Some of the major issues that arose during his tenure were downtown parking, business and neighborhood rehabilitation, public housing, urban edevelopment, and year-around fast time, all of which created extreme controversy. Always sensitive to the attitudes of the public, Mr. Kroll insisted that measures before the Council receive full public debate before taking final Council action. Mr. Kroll was chief telegraph operator for the Studebaker Corp., for which he worked 34 years. Born in City He was born in South Bend Dec. 16, 1912. He married the former Irene Kozoroski on May 24, 1933. He died on the couple's 31st wedding anniversary. Surviving are the widow, three sons, Ronald of South Bend, Terrence, a student at Purdue University, West Lafayette, and Dale, a student at Holy cross Seminary, Notre Dame; a daughter, Mrs. James Engdahl of South Bend; four grandchildren, and four sisters, Mrs. August VanDerHeyden, Mrs. John Toth, and Mrs. Joseph Nemetn, all of South Bend, and Mrs. Clement Chelminiak of Seattle, Wash. Friends may call in the Hickey Funeral Home after 7 p.m. today. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Holy Cross Catholic Church. Rev. Walter Biggins, C.S.C., pastor, officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. The rosary will be re cited at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home. Mr. Kroll was a member of the West Side Democratic and Civic Club, the Achievement forum, the Holy Cross Ushers group, the central Democratic Club, the Northwest Club, and the Holy Cross Lay Family.
