SOUTH BEND - Paul J. Kozak, 81, died Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at home. He was born April 18, 1930 in South Bend to Joseph and Theresa Kozak who preceded him in death along with three brothers, Steve, Joseph and John, and three sisters, Anna, Gizella and Elizabeth. On August 12, 1951, he married Rosemary Wozniak in St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. She died in 1992. In 2002 he married Margaret R. Candler who survives along with their children, Sharon Barrett, Diane (Joseph) Rerick, Gregory (Ruth) Kozak, Lisa (DJ) Hanback, Diane (Michael) Welihan, Linda Candler and Joni Candler; grandchildren, Jason (Laura) Barrett, Aaron (Kim) Barrett, Lindsay (David) Henry, Nathan Rerick, Melissa (Tony) Schelske, Rosemary Kozak, Steven Kozak, Brice Elder and Benjamin Welihan; and great grandchildren, Madison, Taylor, Clara, Colton and Brooklynn. In 1950, he signed a minor league baseball contract with the Chicago Cubs to play in the Midwest league in Joplin, MO. Baseball ended as the Korean War broke out and he served with the U.S. Marines from March of 1950 through August of 1953. In 1954 he was appointed to the South Bend Police Department where he served 20 years. In 1974 he became Vice President of Marketing for two Precision Aircraft Companies. In 1992 he retired for good! Paul was a life member of the South Bend Elks Lodge #235, Moose Lodge #58, Elkhart Moose Lodge #599 and also Battel Senior Softball, Golden Gang Bowlers and FOP Lodge #36. Visitation will be 2:00 pm until 8:00 pm Friday, February 10, 2012 in the ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 1827 E. Ireland Rd., where a Rosary will be prayed at 5:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am Saturday, February 11, 2012 in St. Jude Catholic Church, 19704 Johnson Rd., South Bend, IN. Cremation to take place at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Catholic Church, 19704 Johnson Rd., South Bend, IN 46614 or The Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637.
