MISHAWAKA - Maurice Joseph VanBruaene, 93, passed away on Friday, December 1, 2017, surrounded by his family, at Hospice of the Valley in Glendale, Arizona. Maurice, who was known to his family, friends and work colleagues as Bruno, was born on January 17, 1924 in Mishawaka to Achiel and Mary (Byl) VanBruaene, both of whom preceded him in death.He is also preceded by his sisters, Elsie Maenhout, Evelyn Crofoot, Georgene Bieganski, and Darlene Kasznia; and a brother, Leroy VanBruaene. On Sept. 11, 1948, Maurice married his true love, Elsie Belli, in St. Bavos Catholic Church. She will cherish his memory, along with their children, Michael (Dorene) VanBruaene of Los Angeles, California and Mary (John) Scherer of Scottsdale, Arizona; grandchildren, Lisa (Dan) Sheehan, Justin (Vasiliki) Scherer, and Kathryn VanBruaene; and great-grandchildren, Desolina and Delfina Sheehan. Maurice graduated from Mishawaka High School in 1942. He proudly served his country as a Merchant Marine during World War II, and upon his return to civilian life, returned to work at Indiana & Michigan Electric Company/American Electric Company in Mishawaka. In 1957 Maurice was transferred to the General Office in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He retired as Superintendent of Operations in 1986 after 43 years with the company. Maurice was a member of Saint Pius Catholic Church in Granger, Indiana and later Saint Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Sun City, Arizona. He was a long time member of the Elks in South Bend, Indiana and then in Sun City, Arizona; and also the St. Elizabeth Seton Knights of Columbus, Sun City Arizona. A Funeral Mass will be held on January 13, 10:30 AM, at Saint Pius X Catholic Church in Granger, Indiana. Interment will be with immediate family at a later date in Fairview Cemetery, Mishawaka, Indiana.
