SOUTH BEND - Edward George Matyas, residing in South Bend, passed away early Monday morning, Feb. 27, 2017 in his residence at the age of 95 years old. He was one of twelve children born to Michael & Susie (Brilla) Matyas, on July 28, 1921 in Deer Creek Village of Ashland County, Wisconsin. Mr. Matyas has lived in South Bend since 1977, coming from Wisconsin. On February 10, 1947 in Duluth, Minnesota, Edward was united in marriage to Isabelle M. Taylor. Together they enjoyed 59 years together until her passing on May 9, 2006. He is survived by his three daughters, Nancy (John) Panos of West Lafayette, IN; Wendy (Peter) Micca of Rochester, NY; and Stacy (Orville) Kronewitter of South Bend, IN; seven grandchildren, Michelle (Jason) Rainey, Mark and Omar Matyas, Thomas (Beth) Kronewitter, Matthew and Chelsea Kronewitter, and Christina Micca, along with three great-grandchildren, Evan, Garrett, and Lindsey Rainey. Ed is also survived by a sister, Helen Croteau of Ashland, WI; and two brothers, George Matyas of Ashland, WI; and Tony Matyas of Reedsburg, WI. He was preceded in death by two sons, Gary & Mark Matyas. Mr. Matyas retired as a carpenter and millright, and was a member of United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America Local Union 2337. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during WWII, and was a member of American Legion Post #357. Ed was a great storyteller. For many years he enjoyed bowling, baseball, beer, and playing cards. In his youth he played baseball and later coached little league. Ed was all about family, relocating to be near them. Being a dad was his most cherished role wanting only the best life has to offer for his children. He was known as “Ever Ready Steady Eddie.” Everyone who met him knew immediately he was a sweet man, a good guy who will be sorely missed. The only goal he didn't reach in life was the elusive perfect 300 game. He was a shining example of a life well-lived. Services honoring Mr. Matyas life will be at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, March 4, at the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 South Michigan Street, South Bend.
