SOUTH BEND - Elias "Kit" Kitkowski, 74, of South Bend, IN, passed away at 5:55 a.m. Wednesday, January 24, 2007, in his home with family by his side. Kit was born on October 12, 1932, in South Bend, and was a lifelong resident. He retired in 1999. He was the former owner of the Pink Elephant Liquor Store for 36©u years and 4K Ice Company for 14 years. On May 7, 1955, in Holy Family Church, he married Joan Opaczewski, who survives. Also surviving are his children, Brian Kitkowski of South Bend, IN, Karen (John) Pemberton of New Carlisle, IN, Jeff (Kathy) Kitkowski of South Bend, IN, and Stacie (Phil) Kowalski of Buchanan, MI; three grandchildren, Jocelyn, Jacob and Taylor; four step-grandchildren, Johnathon, Joshua, Jason and Justin; and by three nephews, Michael (Gloria) Urbanski, Jim Urbanski and Bob (Debbie) Urbanski. Preceding him in death were his mother, Pauline Kitkowski; his sister and brother-in-law, Rita and Walt Kazmierczak; and his brother, Gene Urbanski. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 27, 2007, in St. Adalbert Church. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, with a Rosary at 4:00 p.m. Kit was a Korean Navy veteran, serving on the USS Hopi. He was a member of the American Legion Pulaski Post #357, a board member of the Indiana Liquor Stores Association for 10 years and a director of the St. Joseph County C.E.T.A. Program.
