===================l
Helen Louise Klein was the daughter of Joseph Roman "J. Roman" Klein of Poland and Pelagia "Blanche Stella" Kazmirski of the United States of America. Klein is German for small. Helen was born in Indiana, but spoke Polish to her sisters and friends. Her siblings were Stanislaus, Florentyna, Louis, Theodore Klein, Martha Zenzinger, Lucille Walkoviak, Bert Klein, and Roman Klein.
On January 10, 1933, Helen Louise Klein married Mihaij "Michael Martin" Hegedus. They had four children: William, Juliann, Marcia, and Rosemary. Initially, their young family lived in Ardmore, Indiana (St. Joseph County) with no running water. They did not have a bathroom, but instead used an outhouse. Three coal stoves heated the little house.
Eventually, she moved with her husband and children into the city of South Bend, Indiana. By this time, she was fighting the effects of breast cancer. She refused to give up and took in ironing to support her children, and would stand for hours while ironing baskets of clothes for neighbors and others.
She was a wonderful baker and made everything from scratch. She took her home-made pies to family members and friends who were not well. She made a delicious pineapple upside-down cake in a cast iron skillet. Helen also canned and filled her cellar with shelves of peaches, pears, pickles, beans, mushrooms, and applesauce.
Even though Helen Louise Klein Hegedus had a difficult life, she was considerate of other people. She died October 30, 1962. She was 50 years old.
